Krewe Safety and Security Overview

Purpose and Scope

The primary mission of the Krewe Safety and Security Team is to ensure a safe, secure, and controlled environment for all Krewe members, guests, and volunteers during official events. Our responsibilities encompass comprehensive operational oversight across all event formats, including:

  • Official parades and processions
  • Fundraising events and galas
  • Community outreach and general gatherings

By establishing clear protocols and maintaining high visibility, the team minimizes operational risks, ensures compliance with local ordinances, and protects the well-being of our membership.

Core Responsibilities

1. Event Preparation and Planning

  • Risk Assessment: Evaluate venue layouts, parade routes, and crowd density factors prior to each event.
  • Agency Coordination: Serve as the primary point of contact for local law enforcement, emergency medical services (EMS), and municipal parade coordinators.
  • Briefings: Conduct mandatory pre-event safety briefings for the Executive Board, float drivers, and general membership regarding route safety, emergency stops, and communication protocols.

2. Parade Day Operations

  • Float and Vehicle Security: Monitor the staging area and secure the perimeter around the float and support vehicles. Ensure wheel guards and safety lines are properly manned.
  • Crowd Control and Separation: Maintain a safe buffer zone between spectators and Krewe members, preventing unauthorized individuals from boarding floats or breaching moving formations.
  • Thwarter/Walker Management: Coordinate assigned walkers alongside vehicles to monitor blind spots and prevent accidents during the procession.

3. Venue and Fundraiser Security

  • Access Control: Manage guest check-ins, verify credentials, and monitor perimeter access points to prevent unauthorized entry.
  • Asset Protection: Safeguard Krewe property, equipment, and cash-handling areas during fundraising activities.
  • Incident Response: Address disruptive behavior, medical emergencies, or safety hazards immediately and professionally, documenting any occurrences for subsequent review.
